Building Disaster explores notions of construction and destruction through Stalin's "gift" to Poland, the Palace of Culture and Science, as well as other Soviet motifs that take on markedly different meanings in the West. The Palace's hybrid form resembles turn-of-the-century American architecture, despite being a product of Socialist Realism. The building represents both a clash and an exchange of cultures that questions notions of an East/West binary. Building Disaster is comprised of a series of drawings and a 10' x 35' wall piece that attempt to build new content through the use of old forms.
Dagmara Genda is a Polish-born Canadian artist who works in drawing and installation. She finished her MFA at the University of Western Ontario in 2007 and has exhibited across Canada since then. Currently Dagmara lives in London, UK.

The Alberta Printmakers’ Society is pleased to present our March exhibition, About Tiananmen by Montreal artist, Rene Donais. Rene Donais' recent work is inspired by his experiences as a foreign student in Beijing during the 1989 Tiananmen square events. Shocked by the tragic events, Donais became fascinated with the Chinese leaders and dissidents involved in the conflict. Through distorted and mutated portraits of these political leaders and activists, Donais creates a visual dialogue between the two sides of the conflict.
About Tiananmen is on display at the Artist Proof Gallery from March 3 to 27, 2010. An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 12th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and the artist will be in attendance. For more information, please call 403-287-1056 or visit our website at www.albertaprintmakers.ca.
The Alberta Printmakers' Society and Artist Proof Gallery is located at 2010F 11 St. SE in Calgary. Gallery hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Admission is free.
Rene Donais would like to acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts for their contribution to this exhibition.

TRUCK Contemporary Art presents:
Peep Show
SHOWCASING WORK BY
Conan Masterson (London, ON)
Peep Show blurs the boundaries between the entertainer and the entertained in a way that is both impulsively humorous and unsettlingly carnivalesque. Hundreds of anthropomorphic eyeballs dangle in the window, watching the passing parade. These ridiculous and unnerving objects put the viewers on the spot as the pupils fix upon the viewer, twisting the subject/object relationship into a “who sees who” game. Peep Show creates an absurd carnival of role shifting between performer and performance, which is discomforting, beguiling, and irresistible.
The closing reception for Peep Show will run from 7 to 8 PM at the window space and will continue after 8 PM nearby at the Auburn Saloon—please join the artist for light snacks, courtesy of the Auburn! The Auburn is located at 163-115 9 Ave. SE.
The reception and show will be open to the public. Attendance is free.
About Tiananmen – Public Artist Talk by Rene Donais
The Alberta Printmakers' Society is pleased to present a FREE, public artist talk at our studio and gallery on Saturday, March 13th at 1:30 pm. In conjunction with our current exhibition, Montreal artist Rene Donais will discuss his recent work, which is inspired by his experiences as a foreign student in Beijing during the 1989 Tiananmen square events. Shocked by the tragic events, Donais became fascinated with the Chinese leaders and dissidents involved in the conflict. Through his sometimes distorted and mutated portraits of these political leaders and activists, Donais creates a visual dialogue between the two sides of the conflict.
About Tiananmen is on display at the Artist Proof Gallery from March 3 to 27, 2010. An opening reception for this exhibition will be held on Friday, March 12th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and a public artist talk will follow on March 13th at 1:30pm. HEART LAB: ANITA LEVESQUE & BRADLEY SMITH
RESONANCE
Please note that Heart Lab will be doing a performative install for the first few days of their exhibition, so get to the window early to see their process in action.
Reception will be held Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 7 p.m.
Refreshments to follow at the Auburn Saloon - 163, 115 - 9 Ave SE
This work represents a new chapter in our ongoing exploration of the relationship between text and image. We like to think of our work as installation narratives, with ourselves, the artists, as main characters. As our setting changes, so does our focus. Resonance has been created in response and in relation to the surrounding simplicity of the foothills and prairies. This simplicity has inspired us to playfully represent the essence of words as sound, and image as space by creating a 3-dimensional diorama utilizing drawing, stamping, and sculptural methods.
Heart Lab is a collaboration between Anita Levesque and Bradley Smith. Both artists attended ACAD in Calgary, Alberta. They have been exploring apartments together for the past fifteen years; their travels seeing them coast to coast. Currently they live in Nelson, BC, where they continue their on-going effort to bring art into life, life into art.
