Drinks 6:30 p.m. - Dinner 7 p.m. - Lecture 8:15 pm
Big Rock University is an annual lecture and dinner series that raises funds for eight U of C undergraduate scholarships.
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Farideh Jalilehvand to Big Rock. Farideh will share her experience with us on how chemistry is saving historical shipwrecks in museums around the world. Together with her international collaborators, she has found that the large amounts of sulphur embedded in the oakwood of the famous 17th century Swedish warship Vasa may destroy it as the sulphur compounds oxidize into sulphuric acid. A similar sulphur problem has been found in the Mary Rose, the principle warship in the Henry VIII’s navy.
Please join us while Dr Jalilehvand explains how chemistry holds the key to the conservation of these magnificent ships as they face their newest battle.
Call: (403)720- 3239 (Mon- Fri 8:00am – 4:30 pm) to purchase tickets.
