Tension builds as the search for the Honens International Piano Competition Laureates progresses to its final stage tonight.
The competition is based on “Discovering the Complete Artist” – 21st century musicians for 21st century audiences. Laureates are required to have an intellectual and emotional understanding of music and stir both the intellect and the emotions of the listener. A wide knowledge of related music, of musical literature and of the other arts, such as the visual and literary arts, is required.
All under the age of 30, the five finalists have impressive backgrounds. Representing international talent from Ukraine, Russia and Switzerland, the musicians beat out 16 other quarter-finalists in the past two weeks of the competition.
The Honens prize is one of the competition world’s most lucrative. The first prize is $35,000 plus a three-season artistic and career development program including performance engagements, residencies at The Banff Centre, production of recordings, mentoring and coaching.
Music lovers can hear these world-class artists at their best with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in the last round of competition tonight at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. In addition, the last of Honen’s “Music as a Second Language” appreciation lectures will take place before the final concert.
