Calgary plays host to several film/video festivals and festivals with film/video components, including the Calgary International Film Festival, the Calgary Underground Film Festival, the Fairytales International Queer Diversity Film Festival, Sled Island Film, the Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival (GIRAF) and others. Organizations like the Quickdraw Animation Society, The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers, and EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society support the local community of film and video artists with resources and exhibition opportunities. Additionally, Calgary has three movie theatres in or close to the downtown core that often feature screenings of local and independent films: the Globe Cinema, the Uptown Stage & Screen and the Plaza Theatre.
